Another beautiful Saturday in “Never Never Land”.

Ugggg the weather is BEAUTIFUL today and C-shift is pulling the tour. Brings to mind an earlier post titled “Anywhere but here” But in all reality, I’m more here today than I have been since January 16th. Yep… I broke down today and changed my helmet shield. It was difficult in 2 ways. First, I had to take off my #9. They disbanded the C-shift “misfits” back on Jan. 16, 2010 but I’ve been clinging to the memories. It’s hard to think that in just a few short days / weeks they’re closing her doors for good and combining with Station #5 in a brand new home down on Melrose. If you didn’t follow me here from the Misfit blog, check out their progress etc on the upcoming move. Take the time to browse through the posts, it was and remains a great blog / read. Check em out here. Their new table looks awesome! But anyway, it was hard to take the #9 off. Then, instead of ordering a new shield, I struggled with putting on my old one from the “old” #3. Old meaning the on that was located on 6th and Rorer. They closed that one down too along with “old” #1 to combine them into the new #1. Confusing huh? Check out these links for a short photo history of the stations… Station #1, Station #3. Anyway, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep the old shield separate or not. I’m not real sure why but, I put it on today.. maybe bringing a little more “history” and “tradition” into this house.. I’m not real sure but here’s the pics…

So there she is… the old #3 rides again. Ok, moving on, today has been a lot like last day in the fact that we’ve been short staffed. The Medic has been out all day while Opie was back in clinicals (he worked the ER today because he was drained from surgery last day). Eugene was off protecting our freedom. He’s a killer you know…

He keeps saying he’s in the Navy but he came in today wearing Army cloths…

He keeps saying something about being in the “sea bees” is why he wears cammo and not those cute little white suits like the rest of the “semen” wear. He is also adamant about riding on boats and stuff. Eugene on a boat…hummmmmmmm.

The funny thing is, we caught a run over to a local hotel today and seen a lot of “Army men” walking around. Well, I asked one of em and sure enough, they were from the local reserve unit that Eugene is attached to. Oh if we could have caught Eugene lounging by the pool while on “Reserve duty”. Turns out, the guys at the hotel were the guys in the unit from out of town. They said today was actually “family day” for the unit and that’s where they sit through a bunch of seminars and pass out medals. I even hear Eugene received one today…

LMAO! All kidding aside, Eugene is one of several guys who work for our Department and also pull time in the National Guard or Reserves. Just like our full time military personnel, these guys fight for our freedom and I appreciate it! Ok.. I’ll give Eugene a break now.. With just Me, Coon and Joe here today the Engine has been fairly busy. We even caught a little work today…. well, if you can call 3 trash cans burning “work”. In all fairness, those plastic “one arm bandit” cans put off some nasty black smoke when they burn. The call went out as a fire next to a building. We arrived with smoke showing from the rear…looked as if it may have been something. When we got around back, we found out it was just the cans and some rubbish. It was against the building but it was brick. A “can handle” for Engine 3 to say the least. Here’s a shot of Joe “doing it” and Coon “pulling levers” on E3.

We wound out the evening with some awesome mushroom, Bacon Swiss burgers on the grill. I have to admit…I was worried. Every time we…errrr I use this grill, dinner gets BURNT TO A CRISP. Don’t believe me??? Remember this post? LOL well anyway, I pre-stretched a line and everything this evening. I put foil down… you name it… I did NOT want another 2nd alarm here at the house. The good news is that it worked… ummmm ummmm..

To wind it down, I received a comment on the last post from an a
spiring firefighter in Tenn. named Beau Doss. Beau is in the “explorer” fire program in Franklin Tenn. Apparently, he has been inspired by my blogging here and from back in the “Melrose Misfits” days. He gave us both a “shout out” in his first post here. Good luck with your future plans Beau. Study hard.. keep your nose clean … and hit the gym EVERY DAY. I don’t know if your state uses the CPAT test or not but if they do, you’ll need to be in shape. Let us know if we can help in anyway, and thanks for reading. I’ll add his link to the right side bar. Ok, so that about wraps it up for tonight. We’re back on Monday with some “master stream” training and who knows what else. Stay safe and in house and I’ll see ya then.
